A direct successor to last year’s A77 5G, the newer smartphone also sports a notched display in front, but features a much cleaner looking rear panel. Instead of having a rectangular island to house the rear cameras, it comes with two circular bumps that are arranged vertically. Like its predecessor, the OPPO A78 5G is rated at IPX4 for water resistance, as well as featuring a flat frame and a rear panel done in a metallic finish. As for colour selection, the phone will be available in either Glowing Black or Glowing Purple. Its display features a 6.56-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 1612 x 720 pixels, 90 Hz refresh rate, 90 Hz touch sampling rate, 600 nits peak brightness, and Panda glass protection. The OPPO A78 5G also comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, dual stereo speakers, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Interestingly, OPPO has decided to give the phone a slightly less powerful chipset than the preceding model. More specifically, found under its hood is a 5G-enabled MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC, paired together with a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, a single memory configuration of 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage, as well as external memory support via microSD. Powering the phone is a 5,000 mAh battery with 33 W fast charging support through USB-C, which OPPO says is capable of charging up to 52% in 30 minutes. Besides that, the A78 5G comes with Android 13 via the brand’s ColorOS 13 platform, as well as Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC connectivity support.
In the imaging department, the phone’s rear dual-camera setup consists of a 50 MP f/1.8 primary, and an unspecified mono f/2.4 sensor. The front facing shooter within the notch, on the other hand, features an 8 MP f/2.0 sensor. According to the company, both front and rear cameras on the device are capable of recording up to 1080p videos at 30 fps. As usual, we’ll only know of the date of availability and pricing of the OPPO A78 5G when it officially launches in Malaysia later this week. However, several local dealers on both Shopee and Lazada have already listed the smartphone to feature a starting price of RM 1,029, though we can’t say for sure whether this detail is accurate until it is officially confirmed by the company.
